Power Track Size Guide: 500 mm or 1000 mm?

SAGA power track sockets come in two lengths: 500 mm, which holds up to 5 adaptor modules, and 1000 mm, which holds up to 10. Choose by counting the appliances you will plug in at the same time and measuring the clear run of wall, counter or table. Both lengths carry the same 32 A / 8,000 W rating.

The two lengths in mm, cm and inches

Product names use millimetres. A 500 mm track is 50 cm, or about 19.7 inches. A 1000 mm track is 100 cm, one metre, or about 39.4 inches. The same two lengths are sold as surface power tracks and as recessed power tracks.

In inches, the surface track is roughly 3.4 inches wide and the recessed track about 3.1 inches. The 19 mm profile is about three quarters of an inch.

How many sockets fit: the 100 mm pitch

Adaptor modules sit at 100 mm centres along the rail. That pitch is why a 500 mm track takes up to 5 modules and a 1000 mm track up to 10. Every module has the same round face, 71.5 mm across (about 2.8 inches), whichever plug standard it carries.

A full rail is the maximum, not the target. With a 71.5 mm face on a 100 mm pitch, neighbouring modules sit under 3 cm apart, so bulky plugs and chargers can crowd each other. If your appliances have large plugs, plan for fewer modules than the maximum and space them out.

Depth matters in tight spots. The S 91 and S 44 modules are 29.6 mm deep and the S 49 is 38.6 mm, the deepest of the family. Add the plug and the bend of its cable when you check the clearance in front of the track, for example under a wall cabinet or behind a TV unit. All four tracks are sold in black and silver.

Length does not change the power rating

All four tracks are rated 250 V AC, 32 A and 8,000 W maximum continuous. A 1000 mm track gives you more positions, not more power. The total load of everything plugged in must stay within the rating, and your electrician will size the circuit and cable for it.

500 mm or 1000 mm: which suits which space

Choosing a power track length
SpaceTypical choiceWhy
Study or work-from-home desk500 mmRoom for a laptop, monitor, lamp and a USB-C module with a position spare
Short kitchen counter or appliance corner500 mmUp to 5 positions for countertop appliances on a compact backsplash
Long kitchen counter1000 mmAppliances can spread out along the run instead of bunching at one end
TV or media unit500 mm or 1000 mmCount the devices: a TV, set-top box, router and speakers add up quickly
Conference or meeting table1000 mm recessedUp to 10 modules along one metre, flush with the table top

When the count is close to 5, the 1000 mm track is the safer choice, because a track cannot be extended later. For room-specific layouts, see kitchens, offices and conference tables and homes.

The four track sizes

Recessed track cutout sizes

A recessed track sits in a slot cut into the desk, table or counter. The cutout is a little smaller than the track itself: 71 mm wide against the 80 mm track width, and 5 mm shorter than the track length.

Recessed power track cutout dimensions (length × width × depth)
UnitR 500R 1000
Millimetres495 × 71 × 18 mm995 × 71 × 18 mm
Centimetres49.5 × 7.1 × 1.8 cm99.5 × 7.1 × 1.8 cm
Inches (approx.)19.5 × 2.8 × 0.7 in39.2 × 2.8 × 0.7 in

Give your carpenter the millimetre figures, not the rounded inches, and have the track on site before the slot is cut. The supply cable is routed before the track is fixed, with service access left at one end. The installation guide covers the sequence.

How to measure your counter, desk or table

  1. Count the plugs. List every appliance or device that will be plugged in at the same time on that run. That number decides between 5 and 10 positions.
  2. Measure the clear run. Measure the uninterrupted length between obstacles such as wall cabinets, corners, a window frame or a tall unit. The track needs its full 500 mm or 1000 mm.
  3. Check the height or depth. For a surface track, allow for the 86 mm width plus room above and below for plugs and cables. For a recessed track, confirm the panel can take an 18 mm deep slot.
  4. Find the supply end. The supply cable enters at one end of the track. Agree with your electrician which end, and how the cable reaches it.
  5. Keep it in a dry zone. Position the track away from the sink and the hob splash zone. The tracks are IP20, for dry indoor use.

When to use two tracks

  • The run is longer than one metre and you want sockets along all of it.
  • You need more than 10 module positions in one area.
  • The counter is split by a hob, sink or window, leaving two shorter dry stretches. Two 500 mm tracks often fit where a single 1000 mm cannot.
  • A long conference table needs sockets within reach of both ends.

Each track is a separate wired unit. Your electrician will decide how two tracks are fed and protected. Standard tracks are not cut to length on site; for a non-standard length, ask through the contact page. Current prices for both lengths are on the live price list.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes do power track sockets come in?

SAGA power track sockets come in two lengths, 500 mm (50 cm) and 1000 mm (100 cm), each available as a surface-mounted S Series track or a flush recessed R Series track. Surface tracks are 86 mm wide and recessed tracks 80 mm wide. All of them have a 19 mm profile and the same 32 A / 8,000 W rating.

How many sockets fit on a 500 mm power track?

A 500 mm track holds up to 5 adaptor modules, and a 1000 mm track holds up to 10. Modules sit at 100 mm centres and each has a 71.5 mm face. You do not have to fill every position: the 500 mm packs come with three modules, which leaves space for bulky plugs and for a module added later.

What cutout size does a recessed power track need?

The R 500 needs a cutout of 495 × 71 × 18 mm and the R 1000 needs 995 × 71 × 18 mm, given as length, width and depth. The track itself is 80 mm wide with a 19 mm profile. Share the millimetre dimensions with your carpenter before any cutting starts.

Can a power track be cut to a custom length?

No. Standard SAGA tracks are supplied in factory lengths of 500 mm and 1000 mm and are not cut on site. If your project needs a different length, send the dimensions through the contact page and the team will confirm whether a custom length is feasible, along with pricing and lead time.

Does a 1000 mm power track carry more power than a 500 mm one?

No. Both lengths are rated 250 V AC, 32 A and 8,000 W maximum continuous. The longer track only adds positions, up to 10 modules instead of 5. The combined load of everything plugged in has to stay within that rating, and your electrician sizes the circuit, cable and protection to suit.
