Power Track Socket Safety and Care: Everyday Dos and Don'ts
A power track socket is safe when it is installed by a qualified electrician on an earthed, dedicated circuit and used within its ratings in a dry indoor area. The SAGA rail is IP20 touch-safe and passes a 1 mm probe test, so its live conductors cannot be touched without a module fitted. Everyday care is simple: respect the load limits, keep it dry, and switch off the circuit before cleaning.
How the rail keeps live parts out of reach
The open slot along a track is the first thing people worry about. Inside a SAGA track, the copper busbars are fully enclosed in an insulated housing, and the rail passes a 1 mm probe test: a 1 mm test probe cannot reach a live part unless an adaptor module is engaged. The rail is also rated IP20, which covers protection against touch and solid objects, not liquids.
The aluminium body is bonded to earth, and each module is earthed through the track when it is locked in. The polymer parts, including the end caps and module enclosures, are rated UL 94 V-0 for flame retardance. For the standards behind these tests, read how power track sockets are tested for safety.
Shutters and the twist-lock
Every AC socket module has child-proof shutters, which block the socket openings until a plug is inserted. That matters at desk and counter height, where small children can reach.
Every module engages the same way: push down, then rotate 90° clockwise. The specification describes the quarter-turn as a positive lock that cannot detach under load. A blue LED ring on the module confirms that it is seated and powered. The adaptor modules guide explains each type.
Load limits you must respect
| Part | Rating | What it means in use |
|---|---|---|
| Any track (500 mm or 1000 mm) | 32 A / 8,000 W maximum continuous, 250 V AC | The total for everything plugged into the rail at once |
| S 91 and S 44 modules | 13 A / 3,250 W each | The limit for the appliance on that module |
| S 49 module | 15 A / 3,750 W | The highest-rated AC module |
| Track protection | None built in | A 32 A MCB and a 30 mA RCCB must be fitted upstream |
The track has no overcurrent protection of its own. It relies on the MCB and RCCB your electrician fits at the distribution board, and on a cable sized for the load. Add up the wattage on the rating plates of the appliances you run together, and keep heavy fixed appliances on their own dedicated points as your electrician specifies.
Dry indoor use only
IP20 means protection against touching live parts. It does not mean protection against water. Do not mount a track outdoors, in a bathroom, or within the splash zone of a sink or hob, and never wipe it with a wet cloth while it is energised.
Everyday dos and don'ts
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Unplug the appliance before removing or moving a module | Pull a module out while it is under load |
| Rotate the module fully until the LED ring lights | Leave a module half-turned in the rail |
| Match the module to the plug on the appliance | Force a plug into a socket type it was not made for |
| Keep the combined load within 32 A / 8,000 W | Run an extension board off a module to add more sockets |
| Keep the rail slot clear and dry | Push tools, foil or cleaning brushes into the slot |
| Test the RCCB with its test button as your electrician advises | Bypass or upsize the MCB if it keeps tripping |
A note on plugs: each module takes specific plug types, and the S 91 accepts Type A, B, C and I plugs. If a plug does not fit, such as an Indian round-pin Type D or Type M plug, do not adapt or force it; contact support to confirm which module suits it.
How to clean a power track socket
- Isolate the circuit. Unplug the appliances and switch off the track's MCB at the distribution board. The LED rings on the modules should go dark.
- Wipe with a dry cloth. Dust the rail and the module faces with a dry, soft cloth. Do not spray cleaner or water onto the track or into the slot.
- Clean under the modules when needed. Rotate each module counter-clockwise, lift it straight up, wipe its face and the rail beneath, then refit it.
- Let it dry and switch back on. If anything damp touched the track, keep it switched off and have your electrician inspect it before restoring power.
In a kitchen, grease and steam settle on anything near the hob, which is one more reason to mount the track on a dry stretch of wall. Placement is covered in power track sockets for kitchens.
If a module's LED ring is off
- Check that the module is pushed fully down and rotated a full 90° clockwise.
- Look at the other modules. If every ring is dark, the MCB or RCCB has probably tripped or the circuit is switched off.
- Unplug the appliance, then remove the module and fit it again. The specification lists auto-reset overload protection on the modules.
- Try the module in another position on the rail, and try a different module in the original position. This tells you whether the fault follows the module or the track.
- If one module stays dark everywhere, stop using it and raise a warranty request.
When to call the electrician
- The MCB or RCCB trips repeatedly, even after you reduce the load.
- A module, a plug or the rail feels hot, smells of burning or shows discolouration.
- The track has been splashed or soaked. Switch off the circuit first and leave it off until it has been inspected.
- The track is loose on the wall or no longer sits flush in its cutout.
- You want to move the track, extend the circuit or add a second track.
Do not open the track or a module yourself. Any work on the fixed wiring belongs to a qualified electrician, following the steps in the installation guide. Tracks and modules carry a 2-year warranty, and the support team can be reached through the contact page.

Frequently asked questions
Is a power track socket safe?
Yes, when it is installed correctly. The SAGA rail is IP20 touch-safe and passes a 1 mm probe test, so live parts cannot be reached without a module fitted. It must be wired by a qualified electrician on an earthed, dedicated circuit with a 32 A MCB and a 30 mA RCCB upstream, and used in dry indoor areas.
Are power track sockets safe for homes with children?
The rail's live conductors are enclosed and cannot be touched through the slot, as confirmed by the 1 mm probe test. Every AC socket module also has child-proof shutters over the socket openings. As with any socket, supervise young children and mount the track where they cannot easily reach it.
Can a power track socket get wet?
No. The tracks are rated IP20, which covers protection against touch but not against water. Mount them only in dry indoor areas, away from the sink and hob splash zone. If a track is splashed or soaked, switch off its circuit at the distribution board and have an electrician inspect it before using it again.
How much load can a power track socket take?
Each SAGA track is rated 32 A and 8,000 W maximum continuous at 250 V AC, shared across every module on the rail. Individual modules have their own limits: 13 A / 3,250 W for the S 91 and S 44, and 15 A / 3,750 W for the S 49. The track relies on an upstream MCB for overload protection.
How do I clean a power track socket?
Unplug the appliances and switch off the track's MCB first. Wipe the rail and module faces with a dry, soft cloth, and remove modules with a counter-clockwise turn if you need to clean beneath them. Do not use sprays, water or a wet cloth, and never push anything into the rail slot.
Why is the LED ring on my adaptor module not lighting up?
Usually the module is not rotated a full 90° clockwise, or the circuit's MCB or RCCB has tripped. Remove the module, refit it and check the other modules. If all are dark, check the distribution board. If a single module stays dark in every position, stop using it and contact support under warranty.
